Starz renews 'Boss' before bow

Starz has given a second season renewal to its Kelsey Grammer starrer "Boss," a month before its first season bows on the pay cabler. Series stars Kelsey Grammer as a powerful Chicago mayor who's hiding a deteriorating mental condition. Drama hails from Grammer's Grammnet Prods. and Lionsgate TV. Farhad Safinia ("Apocalypto") is creator and exec producer; Gus Van Sant helmed the pilot episode, marking his TV directorial debut, and also exec produces with Grammer, Lyn Greene, Richard Levine, Brian Sher and Stella Bulochnikov. "Boss" is set to bow Oct. 21 for an eight episode run. The second season order is 10 segs, with production targeted to start early next year. Series marks the most high-profile original scripted series to come from Starz since Chris Albrecht took over the pay cabler in January 2010. The early renewal is unusual though not unprecedented especially for pay cable. Grammer has been generating strong early buzz for his perf in the series, which likely encouraged Starz to make a statement with the early pickup. "The first time we read Farhad's script, we knew we had to make 'Boss,' " said Albrecht. "With each episode, the story grew richer, and the cast continued to turn in breakthrough performances. Led by Kelsey and Farhad, this creative team is giving us dramatic storytelling at its very best. For our viewers, we felt it important to start working on the next season as soon as possible." Lionsgate TV topper Kevin Beggs said it was "gratifying" to get such an "early vote of confidence" from Starz. Contact Cynthia Littleton at cynthia.littleton@variety.com

(Dutch, French dialogue)"Hotel Swooni" is the upscale Brussels venue where the lives of half a dozen troubled, yearning characters intersect for 24 hours during a summer heat wave in an overly familiar, formulaic drama so contrived, it's practically impossible to suspend disbelief and be moved by their plights. MovieMantz Review: Drive

By Scott MantzLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Motorists License to Kill DriveRyan Gosling, Carey MulliganDirected by Nicolas Winding Refn Except for 2004s The Notebook, Ryan Gosling has, within the last decade, tended to be put off by heartthrob-style roles in support of non-conventional films like 2006s gritty Half Nelson (that he gained an Oscar nomination), 2007s offbeat Lars and also the Real Girl and last years intensely raw Blue Valentine. But when 2011 goes lower because the year by which Gosling really broke right through to mainstream moviegoers because of his revelatory comic submit Crazy. Stupid. Love. his career is going to change into high gear together with his perfectly understated performance in Drive. Like a stunt driver during the day who moonlights like a getaway driver by evening, Gosling exudes a awesome charisma that recalls more youthful versions of Steve McQueen (from Bullitt) and Robert p Niro (from Taxi Driver). But theres a lot more underneath the hood of the atmospheric slice of los angeles film noir, which saw its director, Nicolas Winding Refn, by divine intention win Best Director in the Cannes Film Festival in May. What begins off being an unusual romance between Goslings shy driver and the troubled neighbor (Carey Mulligan) requires a sharp detour about midway through, producing a brilliant thing of beauty thats bold, daring and unpredictable. It is also stylish and incredibly violent to the stage where audiences may go through inclined to check Drive to the kind of Quentin Tarantino. But since Tarantinos strength lies with dialogue and since sparse the dialogue is within Hossein Aminis script (which is dependant on it by James Sallis) the film is a lot nearer to the kind of David Cronenberg, whose good reputation for violence is much more sparing, but believe it or not grisly. Drive also offers probably the most distinct and memorable soundtracks associated with a movie recently. The score composed by High cliff Martinez gives mind Tangerine Dreams score for 1983s Dangerous Business, even though some tunes (particularly A Genuine Hero) also increase the 80s vibe that spreads throughout the whole film. Goslings intense performance is based on equally strong turns from Mulligan and Oscar Isaac (who plays the ex-disadvantage father to Mulligans youthful boy). Bryan Cranston and Ron Perlman will also be effective because the shady low-lifes who find work with Goslings driver, however the standout submit Drive goes to Albert Brooks a thought like a former film producer-switched-violent crime boss. Drive left this kind of immense and lasting impression on me which i simply couldnt wait to determine it again. This really is one mighty awesome movie, and it is certain to stand the ages like a classic of their genre. Therefore if youre searching for a rewarding motion picture experience which will stick with you lengthy following the house lights show up, then the possibilities you will get lots of mileage from Drive. Son of No One Trailer: Could We Be Looking at the Biggest Whiff of 2011?

The NYC cop drama/thriller Son of No One set up quite a bubble for itself ahead of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival: Talented filmmaker Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Fighting) had his muse Channing Tatum spearheading a cast including Al Pacino, Juliette Binoche, Katie Holmes, Ray Liotta and, going straight, Tracy Morgan, creds that helped the movie earn the festival’s prestigious closing-night spot. And then came that notorious press and industry screening, piercing the bubble and hurling Son into indie limbo. Art-house ensemble piece or genre potboiler? Misunderstood gem or biggest swing-and-miss of 2011? And while I’d never suggest judging a film by its trailer, the latest spot does prompt the necessary question asked of all marketing: Does this preview actually make you want to see Son of No One? That’s where things get complicated. Well, sort of. I’d watch anything Montiel makes; A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints is one of the more underrated efforts of the last five years, and although I can totally see the guy making a misfire, I can’t at all see him making a boring misfire. Your mileage may vary, however, especially if the cop-genre trappings — a little Prince of the City here, a little Serpico there, a little holy shit is that Tracy Morgan — truly feel laid on as thick as they appear to be. (At least it’s an improvement over the festival trailer.) This really is a tough, tough sell job for Anchor Bay, a distributor that knows from schlock but also really wants you to take this seriously in a typically competitive fall marketplace. Does it work? [Fandango]
